Flags dedicated by healthcare workers and placed at the public art installation, In America: Remember, Washington D.C., September 17 – October 3, 2021.
In the fall of 2023, Rituals in the Making began an initiative to collect and preserve the accounts of frontline healthcare professionals during COVID-19. In an effort to counter forms of pandemic revisionism, denialism, and associated effects of social forgetting, we are especially interested in and passionate about preserving these stories.
Here are some example “dispatches” that highlight healthcare worker perspectives shared with us during interviews:
- “Compassion and advocacy in the face of COVID,” an interview with Dr. Monica Verduzco-Gutierrez
- “All of Us Were Willing to Run into the Fire,” an interview with Dr. Ashwin Shankar
- “People want perfect healthcare; not good, perfect,” an interview with Dr. Bill Morris
- “It Was the Most Stressful Year of My Career. Hands Down,” an interview with Dr. Eileen Gavin
- “Our Day Was Just Trying to Get Through,” an interview with pulmonologist Corrine Moreland, NP

The interviews last approximately 45–60 minutes and explore topics related to caring for COVID patients and communicating with families, how the pandemic affected healthcare workers on a personal and professional basis, challenges, memories, and moments of collaboration and care. Interviews can be anonymous, and do not require participants to reveal the identity of their workplace or colleagues.
If you are interested in learning about the initiative or would like to do an interview with us, please contact us: ritualsinthemaking6@gmail.com
